Is Your Hip Making Music?
Snapping hip syndrome, also called dancers’ hip, is a snapping sensation or popping sound heard in the hip while walking, flexing or extending the limbs. This condition can cause discomfort and pain. The good news is that this can be resolved with physical and occupational therapy.
What Causes Snapping Hip Syndrome?
There are several reasons your hip might start “singing” when you move:
- Extra-articular (outside the joint):
Tendons or muscles sliding over bony structures near the hip, causing a snap. This can happen on either the inside (medial) or outside (lateral) of the hip. - Intra-articular (inside the joint):
Issues like cartilage tears or loose fragments within the joint can cause mechanical snapping. These are often associated with inflammation and fluid buildup.
Symptoms to watch for:
- A snapping or popping sensation in the hip
- Pain or discomfort, especially during movement
- Hip stiffness or reduced range of motion
- Possible swelling if inflammation is present
Treatment of Snapping Hip Syndrome
The treatment of snapping hip syndrome involves a combination of physical and occupational therapy, traditional medicine, and at times, surgery.
- Physical and Occupational Therapy: The use of Hydration, Ibuprofen, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (also known as HI-RICE) provides the patient with temporary relief in the acute stages. It is best to consult with a physician before taking any medication to rule out allergies and associated side effects. Expert supervision by physical and occupational therapists is essential for the gradual healing of the affected regions.
- Traditional Medicine: A physician may recommend prescription medications for pain relief and reduction of inflammation. Corticosteroids injections are commonly prescribed. Talk to your physician about which medication is best for you.
- Surgical Interventions: If conservative treatment fails and the root cause is structural, surgery might be recommended. Post-surgical rehab with a physical and occupational therapist is critical to restore mobility and strength.
Snapping You Back Into Action
Physical and occupational therapy provide exciting possibilities to promote strengthening, healing and rehabilitation of the hip and lower limbs. The sooner you seek care, the faster you can return to painfree movement.
Some exercises your therapist might recommend for home include:
- Active and passive stretching
- Strengthening movements
- Light aerobic activity
Snapping hip syndrome can be annoying, even painful but it doesn’t have to be permanent. With professional assessment and a personalized treatment plan, you can restore your range of motion and dance through life pain-free.
