A Guide to Better Sleep and a Healthier Back
Let’s face it, buying a new mattress is a big decision; especially when you consider the cost and the fact that this is a purchase that you are
“stuck with” for a number of years.
Choosing the right one is essential for your sleep quality, spinal health, and overall wellbeing.
Here are things to consider before purchasing a new mattress:
- Your body’s response to a mattress varies. The strength and flexibility of your lower back play a big role in how a mattress feels to you.
- Friends and family can’t choose for you. What works for them may not work for your body.
- You spend one-third of your life sleeping. Testing a mattress for just 2-3 minutes in a store doesn’t give you enough time to really know if it’s the right one.
- Know the guarantee. Understand the return policy and warranty terms before you buy.
- Consider your personal needs. Keep in mind any special needs you may have when buying your mattress.
Are you waking up with Lower Back Pain?
If a mattress is too soft it will not support your spine and this may cause you to wake up with back pain.
On the other hand, a bed that’s too firm could place an unnecessary amount of pressure on your joints and trigger pain.
Most people do best with a mattress that strikes a balance – not too soft, not too firm. Finding the one that’s “just right” is crucial for your back health and quality of sleep.
Let’s find what’s Best for You
An old, sagging mattress can be a major contributor to chronic back pain. Consult your physical and occupational therapist, who may help you determine what kind of mattress can help you reduce lower back pain and discomfort. It may be time for a change.
It’s important to look into the ABC’S of your mattress to determine what could be the cause of your back pain:
A – AGE: How old is the mattress? Has it been in use for eight or more years?
B – BEAUTY: What does the mattress look like? Is it lumpy and bumpy with sags and dips in it? Do you notice any stains, rips, or torn areas?
C – COMFORT: Is your mattress as comfortable now as it was when you first purchased it? Is it still comfortable or is it hard to find a “good spot” to lay on when you’re trying to sleep?
S – SUPPORT: Lie flat on your back. Can you easily move your hand under the small of your back? Too much or too little space may signal poor support.
We’ll help you decide which mattress is best for you. When you come in for an evaluation, we’ll:
- Assess your posture
- Identify any muscle imbalances
- Create a personalized exercise routine
- Advise you on whether your current mattress supports your spine properly
We’ll show you how physical and occupational therapy can help reduce your back pain, improve your sleep, and help you wake up feeling refreshed and pain-free.
